"A tiny leak will sink a great ship."
Leaky beverage cans are rare, but dealing with the aftermath of these "leakers" can be a nightmare. These leaking cans can harm other products and tarnish a brand's reputation.
Primary Issues Leading to Leaking Beverage Cans:
1. Internal Liner Failure:
When the liner inside the can fail to perform as expected, it allows the liquid to eat through the aluminum and reach the outer surface, causing corrosion.
2. External Liner Failure:
Cans have an exterior liner that must withstand contact throughout their journey from manufacturing to consumption. Leaks from failures in either the internal or external liner can affect the outer packaging of other products the liquid touches. Not all can suppliers maintain the same quality standards.
3. Pinhole Leaks:
Liner integrity issues can lead to corrosion, resulting in microscopic holes, known as pinholes, forming in the can. While you may see the leaked liquid, finding the tiny hole it escaped from can be challenging.
4. Seaming Issues:
Seaming equipment creates a continuous seal between the lid and the can, ensuring product containment. If the equipment is misaligned or foreign objects enter the process, the product may leak from a weak or compromised seam.
5. Damage:
Leaks can also occur due to damage sustained in the warehouse or during transport. While it's crucial to palletize products properly for maximum protection using sufficient wrap and reinforcement, sometimes that isn't enough. Rinsing cans effectively with properly pasteurized water is essential. Any product left outside the can could lead to secondary corrosion.
